Telltale Signs Your Pool Needs Repairs

Category: Blog
January 14, 2020

Swimming is the fourth most popular activity in the US, for athletic events and as a recreational activity. Unsurprisingly, swimming pools are a common feature in homes in Houston.

If you have a swimming pool at your home, the fall and winter months is the perfect time to make critical repairs or renovations so that they don’t interfere with the busy summer season.

Here are a few of the most common symptoms and what you can do about them:

Swimming Pool

Unclean Water

Dirty and green water is the most obvious indicator that something’s not quite right with your pool equipment. Blocked filters, clogged pipework, and malfunctioning pumps can all cause the pool water to turn murky. But, in the fall and winter, the water temperature drops so algae doesn’t grow, the issues aren’t as noticeable.

Before the temperature dropped, you may have noticed that your pool water would get cloudy or green despite treating it regularly. Chances are there’s debris clogging your filtration system hindering water flow.

If you haven’t cleaned your DT filter or replaced your sand filters in years, the debris in the filters can actually contaminate the water—even if the water flowing through the pipes is clean.  You may treat the water for removing impurities, but it’ll still get dirty really quickly.

If your pool pump isn’t working properly, it can cause the water to turn filthy. Here’s what to look for:

  • You’ve noticed a the pump “revs” up or gets louder than usual when it runs
  • The pump shuts down on its own quite frequently
  • You have trouble getting the pump started.

These signs indicate that your pump is struggling to circulate the water through the filtration system resulting is dirty or cloudy pool water.

Malfunctioning Heating System

While the weather doesn’t get very cold in Houston, we still use our swimming pool heaters. In Texas, we leave the polar bear club activity to the folks in the Northeast. When your pool heater is malfunctioning, it may not be receiving an adequate supply of water flow or it may not be getting enough airflow. Both of these factors can affect the heater’s capacity to heat the pool water. An older heating unit is especially likely to malfunction, despite getting sufficient water flow and airflow.

Leaks & Lowering Water Levels

If you’ve been refilling your swimming pool more often than you usually do or if the water level appears to be significantly low after several hours of refilling, your pool is leaking.

A leak may occur in the pipework or even in the walls of the pool causing the water level to drop. It’s important to address leaks as soon as possible as neglect can cause minor repairs to become major ones.
